I have many fond memories of elementary days.

I have many fond memories of elementary days.

The Montessori system of our former school equips its students with a myriad of significant life skills: reading classic literature, classifying animals according to their genus, phyla, class and order, venturing into extracurricular activities (I was a member of the choir and the angklung ensemble :))), and — believe it or not — butchering chickens.

Our whole batch did the latter for sixth-grade Agriculture class and discovered — to our collective surprise, amusement and/or horror — that the following day’s cafeteria viand was chicken adobo.

These were but some of the things we reminisced about when three of my grade school friends and I had a long-overdue bonding session yesterday.

L-R: Me, Luiza, Lhannie and Kyden

Luiza, Lhannie and I formed a best-best-best-friendship in Grade 2, calling ourselves Triple L (I used my first name Lysa from elementary to high school).

From then on, no prepubescent drama, section changes, separation of schools or what-have-you ever got in the way of our friendship.

The same holds true for Kyden, and our other friends who weren’t able to join us because of internship and family duties.

Behold, our grade school selves…

We swapped tales of the past and the present (the future we’ll leave for another date), and had a go at the Icon Pop Quiz game.

With certain memorable exceptions, I was never much of a digital games person. But this game? HNNNGH. We spent hours identifying films, TV series and fictional and real-life personalities through their graphic — though not always literal —representations.

The five of us finished a good deal of levels, calling to mind obscure cartoon characters, slasher films, as well as famous and infamous personalities from decades past.

As we guessed answer upon answer, I thought to myself, “Damn, we are getting old.”
